It’s an exceptional camera for monitoring inside or outside your home, a fact that makes it easy to recommend as our new Editors’ Choice award winner for affordable compatible HD infrared security camera.
The Wyze Cam V3 compatible HD infrared security camera looks similar to the Wyze Cam V2, but there are subtle differences. It features a square black camera front as opposed to the round face found on the V2 and has rounded edges unlike the sharp corners of the V2. Additionally, the compatible HD infrared security camera has an IP65 weatherproof rating, making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use as HD infrared security camera.
The V3 cube measures 2.2 x 2.0 x 2.0 inches (HWD) and sits atop a hinged square base that adds an additional 1.2 inches to the overall height when fully extended. The hinge gives you 180 degrees of vertical movement and uses a swivel mechanism for 360 degrees of horizontal maneuverability.
The front of the camera houses the lens, microphone, and LED indicator. The LED lights solid blue when everything is connected and working properly and flashes red and blue during the setup process. There is a speaker on the back of the camera, along with an attached USB power cable, and the bottom has a micro SD card slot and a reset button, both of which are protected by rubber caps.
Box includes camera, six-foot USB extension power cable, USB power adapter, wall mount plate, mounting screws, and a quick start guide.

The Wyze Cam V3 features several performance upgrades over the V2. It uses a Starlight sensor that enables color night vision and delivers 1080p video at 20fps with a 130-degree field of view. In comparison, the V2 offers black and white night vision captures video at 15 frames per second and has a 110-degree field of view. Additionally, the HD infrared security camera has a built-in 80dB siren and can be used with the Wyze Spotlight Kit (sold separately), which attaches to the top of the camera and turns on when the camera detects movement. Wyze sells the Spotlight Kit on its own for $16.98, or as a bundle with the V3 for $49.96, saving you a few dollars compared to buying it separately.
When the HD infrared security camera detects motion or sound, it will record a 12-second clip and store it in the cloud for free for 14 days, but there’s a 5-minute slowdown between events that the camera won’t record. However, if you install a 32GB microSD card (not included), you can enable 24-hour continuous recording which allows you to view photos in time-lapse mode.
The HD infrared security camera also supports people detection, and will soon support vehicle, pack and animal detection, but you will need a Wyze Cam Plus subscription to access these features. For $1.99 per cam per month, Cam Plus gives you the aforementioned smart motion detection features as a 14-day record of full-length video for as long as the motion continues, with no lag period.
Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant voice commands are supported, but Apple HomeKit integration is not. However, the V3 works with IFTTT applets that allow it to integrate with third-party smart home devices. You can also create rules for integrating your camera with other Wyze devices such as smart light bulbs, motion sensors, and door locks.
Camera V3 uses the same mobile app (for Android and iOS) as all other Wyze devices. The home screen contains panels for all of your installed Wyze products. The V3 panel contains a still image of the camera view and an on/off button. Click on the panel to start a live broadcast that can be viewed in full-screen mode by flipping your phone sideways.
There are five buttons below the video panel. The volume button mutes and unmutes the audio, and the record button allows you to manually record video. The Speak button initiates two-way speaking, while the Photo button takes a still image of the current view. Clicking the More button opens a panel at the bottom of the video screen with buttons to enable the Motion Tags feature, which places a box around whatever triggers the motion sensor; Enable siren display video schedule; View video and photos in your album, And turn off the camera.
Click the gear icon in the upper right corner to access the settings screen, where you can enable/disable motion and sound recording, configure notifications, adjust motion and sound detection sensitivity levels, configure night vision settings, and enable recording to an SD card. Here you can also enable settings that the camera will start recording and send a push alert when it detects a smoke or carbon monoxide alarm. Use schedule settings and automation to create rules for making your camera interact with other compatible HD infrared security camera devices and for creating notification schedules.
Performance of HD Infrared Security Camera
As with other Wyze devices, the compatible HD infrared security camera is easy to install. Simply download the mobile app, create an account, and tap the plus icon in the upper left corner of the home screen. Tap on Add Device, then tap on Cameras and select Wyze Cam V3 from the list.
Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the camera to a power outlet and confirm when the LED indicator flashes red. Click “Next,” tap the setup button under the camera, and when you hear “Ready to connect,” tap “Next” again in the app. Select your Wi-Fi network, enter the password, then scan the QR code on your phone screen with the Wyze Camera, and wait until you hear “The QR code has been scanned.” At this point, the camera will be added to your network and to your list of Alexa devices. Give your camera a name and you’re ready to go.
The V3 performed well in the test. Daytime color quality is excellent and the HD analog security camera and 1080p video appear sharp and distortion-free. The color night vision feature also works well, but as we’ve seen with other cameras, the colors aren’t quite as vibrant as what you get during daylight hours or when the room is brightly lit.
Sound and motion detection work as intended, but you’ll need to lower sensitivity levels on both to avoid alerts from background noise and motion from small pets. Alerts arrive instantly when triggered, and the recorded video is as sharp as it is live. The camera does a great job of identifying human emotion, and I had no trouble responding to Alexa voice commands to stream video to the Amazon Echo Show. My automation has made the camera turn on the Wyze lamp when motion is detected without a hitch.
The two-way audio is loud and clear enough, and the built-in siren is loud enough to be heard throughout my house.
